Week 9, July 17th: Final Steps

July 18th, Tuesday:

This week's blog post is likely the last post pertaining to the SURF Internship. Today, Emily and I went sampling one final time at Lattins Cove in Danbury. This site had slipped through the cracks on past excursions, we intended to make sure there were no fish home here. Joining us, as usual, was Len as our boat captain, and David once again came along. In addition, Mark of the Candlewood Lake Authority joined to take photos of the lake, and us, as we were working.

Although we found no tagged carp in Lattins Cove, we saw an abundance of Eurasian Milfoil.

We discussed this abundance of milfoil with Mark, all of us noticing the lack of triploid grass in the region. No triploid grass carp, in 2015, 2016, or 2017, we released in Lattins Cove, and the nearest release point is the Danbury Town Beach, which has no shortage of milfoil either. It is very possible that the carp have simply not yet found this region of the lake, and it will take them some time to get there. Regardless, Lattins cove is definitely a region of the lake to keep an eye on.

July 21st, Friday:

This evening, Emily and I presented an abridged version of our results to the students and families of Dr. Pinou's 'Finding Our Way' watershed program. Although Candlewood Lake is part of the Housatonic Watershed, that was really the only relevance our research had to this program. Regardless, Those present seemed interested in our research, and many stayed behind to ask us questions.

For those of you interested in hearing Emily and I present our findings more in depth then we did today, we will be having another presentation around August 21st at Westconn, likely in the evening. I will post concrete locations and times in the Candlewood Voices Facebook group, and the CLA will be announcing it as well, so please be sure to check those sources if you are interested!
